We&#8217;re sharing our experience to help other businesses facing similar situations and to demonstrate our commitment to transparency with our clients.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>What Happened<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Within a 24-hour period, 15 negative reviews flooded our Google listing. The red flags were immediate:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">None of the reviewers were in our customer database<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All reviews appeared within hours of each other<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The accounts showed suspicious patterns<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most disturbingly, two reviews constituted clear extortion attempts, with one reviewer providing a WhatsApp number and suggesting we contact them to have the comments removed<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This wasn&#8217;t legitimate customer feedback\u2014it was a deliberate attack on our business.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The New Legal Landscape<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Timing matters here. The Federal Trade Commission recently implemented new regulations banning fake reviews, with penalties that can reach significant amounts per violation. The guide covers the nature of these scams, the reporting process, what business owners can anticipate, and crucially, actions to avoid. It&#8217;s titled &#8220;<span style=\"color: #467886;\"><u><a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/business\/answer\/16404809\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Report negative review extortion scams on your Business Profile<\/a><\/u><\/span>.&#8221; The document has a link to the <span style=\"color: #467886;\"><u><a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/business\/contact\/merchant_extortion?sjid=8100053049998284180-NA\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">merchant extortion report form<\/a><\/u><\/span>.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><b> Report the Extortion Attempts<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The reviews requesting payment for removal were reported separately, as they constitute criminal extortion. We contacted the Federal Trade Commission and used their reporting system to report the fraud and the extortion attempt. Note that reporting to the FTC is particularly important for cases involving extortion or egregious patterns; for most fake reviews, reporting to the platform directly is the primary step.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li><b> Legal Steps<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We documented everything in case legal action becomes necessary. Since both the extortion attempt and the fake reviews constitute illegal activity, you can also file a police report. Within 12 hours of our reports, all 15 fake reviews were removed from our profile.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This quick resolution demonstrates that review platforms are taking fake reviews seriously, especially in light of the new federal regulations. However, it required immediate action and proper documentation on our part. <\/span><b>Note that response times can vary\u2014we were fortunate with our quick resolution, but other businesses may experience different timelines.<\/b><\/p>\n<h2>What This Means for Other Businesses<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you experience a similar attack:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Act quickly.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The sooner you document and report, the faster the resolution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Stay professional.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Angry or defensive responses can backfire. Stick to facts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Know your rights.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The FTC&#8217;s new regulations may offer businesses and consumers additional legal protections.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Don&#8217;t engage with extortionists.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Report them to the platform and law enforcement.
